Nemoptic, an e-paper display company for consumer and professional handheld devices, today announced that it has garnered two innovation awards in recognition of its cutting-edge BiNem(R) (Bistable Nematic) technology that makes crisp bistable liquid crystal displays (LCD) for e-paper products. International business research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan selected Nemoptic to win the 2007 European Technology of the Year Award and the Paris Opto 2007 Show gave Nemoptic's A4 e-paper display the Silver Award for Innovation.
The Frost & Sullivan European Technology of the Year award is given to a company (or individual) that has carried out new research, which has resulted in innovation(s) that have or are expected to bring significant contributions to the industry in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. This award recognizes the quality and depth of a company's research and development program as well as the vision and risk-taking that enabled it to undertake such an endeavor. At the Opto Show, peer group representatives choose the gold, silver and bronze photon award winners for companies displaying the most innovative products.
"We are proud to win industry recognition for our BiNem e-paper technology," said Jacques Noels, CEO at Nemoptic. "It is a result of hard work and foresight in technology and business areas, as well as the ongoing support of our investors. I extend a big thank you to all of the Nemoptic team."
E-paper displays have all the attributes of physical paper, plus the advantage that content can be displayed and erased electronically. E-paper displays can be used in a range of handheld devices, such as e-books, e-newspapers, e-dictionaries, electronic shelf labels, point-of-purchase (POP) displays, and e-documents. Nemoptic's BiNem LCD displays are recognized for their likeness to ink on paper, zero power consumption and price, which are important criteria for the commercial viability of e-paper display products. This makes them suitable for example for mobile devices, unlike most flat panel displays which have high energy consumption, as well as front and backlight requirements and cost.
"BiNem has a broad range of unique features such as zero-power, infinite memory (years), excellent optical quality, paper-like readability, advanced gray scales and color capability and we have demonstrated its compatibility with flexible substrates," said Jacques Angele, VP Technology Programs & Co-founder at Nemoptic. "We continue to introduce enhancements to help give users the most positive e-paper display reading experience."
Earlier this year, Nemoptic signed a manufacturing deal with Seiko Instruments Inc. to produce high volumes of BiNem LCD e-paper display modules and entered a joint project with Label Headway, to manufacture Electronic Shelf Labels. The company recently launched its high resolution (200 dpi) A4 e-paper display (210 x 297mm) and brought out a new version of its color e-paper display, which offers from 16 up to 1 million colors. Over the summer, the company opened its Japanese office to handle sales in Asia. www.nemoptic.com |
