According to The Scientist, the Leica TCS SP5 X Supercontinuum Confocal Mi-croscope is one of the most innovative products on the Life Science market. The US American maga-zine had asked a panel of four scientists from various North American research institutions to choose the best product innovations of the year 2008. In its latest issue (2008/12), The Scientist now presents the ten winners – including the Leica TCS SP5 X which was launched on the North American market last February. The confocal microscope integrates a white light laser that provides users with the full spectrum of wavelengths between 470 and 670 nm for examining bacteria cultures, for example.
“Besides paying tribute to microscope technology in general, the award acknow-ledges the entire imag-ing system of Leica Microsystems with all its technical facets,” says Product Manager Scott Young. And this is what the jury had to say about the Leica TCS SP5 X: “The ability to readily vary laser lines across broad regions of the spectrum has major implications. This enables the use of previously inaccessible fluorophores, provides tremendous simpli¬fication for imaging systems, and could be very valuable for multiplex imaging applica¬tions.” Leica Micro¬systems combines a one-of-a-kind AOBS (acousto-optical beam splitter) for the excitation light and SP detector for various fluorescent dyes. This system allows the best use of the white light spectrum for confocal microscopy, without loss of light and with maximum sensitivity.
The monthly journal The Scientist has published a ranking of the best vendors of Life Science products for the last six years. To recognize winning combinations of invention, vision and utility, this year’s spot¬light was on the ten best product innovations for the first time.
