Saelig's CANminiBOX™Saelig Company, Inc. has announced the debut of CANminiBOX™, a versatile, compact embedded controller that is particularly well-suited for embedded CANbus control applications.  Units incorporate high-reliability components, with a wide variety of hardware and software options also available in the tiny Élan-based CANminiBOX™.   The product’s 128 MB SD-RAM capacity is sufficient to control the pre-installed Linux OS (other options available), while a 512 MB CompactFlash card storage can easily be upgraded.  CANminiBOX™ also offers low power consumption (less than 6W), ensuring the reliability of passive cooling. DIN-rail mounted units can be placed almost anywhere, even in the tightest locations, due to its remarkably small dimensions: 3” x 2” x 4.7”.

Even with a diverse array of front panel standard interface connections, this versatile controller system weighs less than 1lb.  The unit’s Linux operating system comes pre-installed as standard, while other choices such as QNX or VxWorks are easily integrated to suit customer needs. Each CANminiBOX™ system is 100% tested and customizable with additional I/O or CANbus ports, even in small quantities, with design-team hardware and software support at no extra cost. CANminiBOX™‘s guaranteed lifetime of at least five years is essential when designing-in controllers for medical or military and aerospace equipment.

CANminiBOX™ features an AMD Élan 133MHz SC520 processor with 128 MB internal SD-RAM and  512 MB SD-RAM CompactFlash,  with front-panel availability for 10/100MBit/s Ethernet, status LED’s, an RS232 serial port, a CAN port, and one USB1.1 port.  Units are 10-28VDC powered, making them ideal for vehicle battery-powered operation. CANminiBOX™ is designed to operate within an ambient temperature range of 0 to +50° C (+32° F to +120° F). All inputs feature ESD protection of 2kV.   Fanless operation provides fit-and-forget, maintenance-free operation, making CANminiBOX™ the perfect solution for a wide variety of embedded automation needs.

Made in Europe by Janz AG, a leading industrial control and CANbus manufacturer, CANminiBOX™ is available now from Saelig, with units starting at $795.00 USD. Bryan Gass—Techcon Systems

Bryan talks to Trevor Galbraith about why he believes that implementing a rigid strategy now will strengthen Techcon Systems in these challenging times and beyond.

Small Matters

Synergy, the Occam process and twisted wire interconnect

The term/concept of synergy seems very apt when applied to the interaction of the Occam process solderless assembly concept in combination with a unique PCB interconnection technology called twisted wire interconnect or TWI.

Lead-Free Matters

Measuring package on package-possible procedure, comments welcome

Package on package assembly features paste-only assembly or a combination of solder paste at board level and dip flux on the top row of ball terminations.
