First quarter 12% global end market growth slowdown but no disaster on horizon

Despite a predicted ‘near-recession’ global economy, first quarter world electronic equipment sales were up 12% (1Q’08 vs. 1Q’07)—but off 10% compared to 4Q’07. In 1Q’08 inventory levels bulged throughout the supply chain, but this stock buildup has historically happened each first quarter (following the usual holiday 4Q busy season). Large global EMS providers behaved similarly—turning in a 10% 1Q’08/1Q’07 sales increase.
